How to Prepare Laundry Collection Properly

A doorstep laundry service saves time only when your clothes arrive ready for the right treatment. Knowing how to prepare laundry collection helps protect delicate pieces, prevents missed instructions and keeps collection day quick, accurate and stress-free.

You do not need to spend an hour sorting every sock. A few sensible checks are enough to help your laundry team identify what needs washing, ironing, dry cleaning or specialist care. The result is better garment care and fewer questions after your collection has left the door.

How to prepare laundry collection before pickup

Start by gathering the items you want cleaned in one place. A clean laundry bag, basket or sturdy carrier is ideal. Avoid overfilling a bag until it will not close properly, especially if it contains bedding, towels or bulky jumpers. Separate bags make it easier to carry and reduce the risk of garments being crushed or mixed with items needing different treatment.

Before packing, check every pocket. Remove loose change, tissues, receipts, pens, keys, headphones and anything valuable. A forgotten pen can leak in a wash, while paper tissues can cover an entire load in fibres. Laundry professionals take care during processing, but pocket checks are the simplest way to prevent avoidable damage.

It is also worth emptying pockets on garments that appear clean. A jacket sent for dry cleaning may still contain a lip balm, a train ticket or a business card. If you are sending children’s clothing, take an extra moment to check trouser pockets, school uniform and coat linings.

Keep special-care items apart

Not every item should be treated in the same way. Place dry-clean-only garments, delicate fabrics and pieces with visible stains in a separate bag where possible. This helps make your requirements immediately clear at handover.

Silk, wool, cashmere, embellished dresses, leather-trimmed clothing and structured jackets often need more considered care than everyday cottons. The same applies to wedding dresses, formalwear and occasion outfits. If a garment has a care label, leave it attached and readable. Do not remove labels simply because they feel uncomfortable when worn.

For bedding, curtains, rugs, duvets and other home essentials, keep each category separate from clothing. These larger items can require different cleaning methods and handling. A duvet cover does not need to be removed from a duvet unless your booked service specifically requires it, but it is helpful to state exactly what is inside the bag.

Separate what needs washing, ironing or dry cleaning

Sorting is useful, but it does not have to be complicated. Group everyday wash-and-fold laundry together, put items requiring wash and iron in another bag, and keep dry cleaning separate. If you only have a small number of pieces, clear labelling is more useful than creating several half-empty bags.

Do not try to pre-treat every mark with household products. Some stain removers can set a stain, bleach the fabric or react badly with professional cleaning processes. Instead, point out the stain and explain what caused it if you know. Coffee, red wine, oil, make-up and ink all respond differently to treatment.

A short note such as “olive oil on front of shirt” gives the cleaner better information than simply saying “stain”. If a mark has been there for weeks or has already been washed and dried, say so. Honest details allow for the most suitable approach, though no professional service can guarantee complete removal of every old or set-in stain.

Label bags and share clear instructions

A label prevents confusion when you have more than one bag at collection. Include your name, booking reference if available, and a simple description of the contents. For example: “Wash and iron – work shirts” or “Dry cleaning – two coats and one dress”.

If you have specific preferences, make them clear before collection rather than after. You might want shirts hung rather than folded, items returned on hangers, a particular garment kept away from heat, or a missing button repaired through an alterations service. Clear instructions help your laundry provider confirm what is possible and price specialist work correctly.

Be realistic about fabric condition. Faded colours, existing holes, loose sequins, cracked faux leather and weakened elastic may worsen during cleaning because the material is already fragile. Mention these issues at the outset, particularly for sentimental or expensive items. Photos taken before collection can provide useful records for valuable garments.

For items with matching pieces, such as a two-piece suit, school uniform set or bedding set, send them together. Cleaning one piece alone can sometimes cause a slight difference in colour or finish, particularly with older fabrics that have already faded through wear and washing.

Make collection day easy

Choose a collection time when someone can hand over the bags, or follow your provider’s approved instructions for a safe collection point. Keep laundry away from communal hallways, open doorsteps or areas exposed to rain unless collection has been specifically arranged there. Clothes left outside can become damp, dirty or inaccessible.

If you live in a flat with concierge access, provide any relevant entry details when booking. If there are stairs, a difficult parking situation or a large quantity of linen, a quick note can help the driver plan appropriately. This is especially helpful for households sending duvets, rugs or multiple bags after a busy week.

Count high-value pieces before collection. You do not need to count every T-shirt, but it is sensible to note tailored suits, designer dresses, coats, pairs of shoes or specialist items. For regular laundry, an approximate bag count is usually enough. For dry cleaning and specialist care, a written item list offers extra reassurance.

Hamlet Laundry offers free collection and delivery across London, so preparing bags in advance means your pickup can fit around work, school runs and the rest of your day rather than the other way around.

Preparing laundry for a fast turnaround

Fast service works best when the booking details match the bags at your door. Check that you have selected the correct service, collection slot and return preference. If you need an item back for a meeting, event or trip, flag this before collection rather than assuming every garment can be prioritised.

A 24-hour turnaround can be a major help for everyday laundry, but specialist items may need longer. Delicate dry cleaning, stain treatment, repairs, wedding dress preservation and rug cleaning can require additional inspection and careful processing. Speed matters, but so does returning the item in the right condition.

Avoid sending damp laundry in a sealed bag. Wet towels, gymwear and bedding can develop odours or mildew if left enclosed. If you cannot dry the items first, use a breathable bag and let the collection team know they are damp. Similarly, heavily soiled pet bedding, muddy sports kit or items contaminated with bodily fluids should be declared clearly so they can be handled safely.

A simple collection checklist

Before your driver arrives, take two minutes to confirm the essentials:

  • Pockets are empty and valuables have been removed.
  • Dry cleaning, washing, ironing and specialist items are clearly separated or labelled.
  • Stains, damage and care preferences have been noted.
  • Care labels remain attached to delicate garments.
  • Your collection bags are clean, secure and ready at the agreed time.

This small routine protects your wardrobe and helps your laundry team deliver the quality you expect. Once it becomes habit, laundry collection feels less like another household task and more like the practical time-saving service it should be.
